Gardening

In September, we inspected our school garden that the year 6 students had cleared and replanted last year. We looked at and discussed the large number of bees that were around the garden and noted this as a big change to last year. We picked some flowers for the purpose of drying the flowers so they could be enjoyed for longer in the school.

In October, we planted crocus bulbs in different parts of the school garden to increase the number of flowers and insects around the school. It was interesting that it was the first time many of the students planted bulbs so they learned a lot about roots/shoots/seeds through this activity. We look forward to seeing the results of our planting in the Spring!

At the beginning of April, our crocus bulbs came into bloom outside our school. They were nice but we need to plant more next year in order for them to have more of an impact.

After the Easter holiday, we focussed on planting again. Some members of the Green Flag committee went shopping for seeds and soil. We planted cress, courgette, radishes, sunflowers and many other types of seeds. We planted them in small pots and plan to replant them in our school garden when they grow a bit more.

On Earth Day, April 22nd 2020, we celebrated it by planting some flower boxes outside our school to highlight the special day.

Recycling

The Green Flag Committee painted and decorated paper bins for each classroom using old white paint and cardboard boxes. These were filled by students and emptied regularly by teachers into the larger paper recycling bins in the Staff Room.

We put yellow plastic bags for recycling plastic in the Staff Room and the Student Room. On the last day of the Autumn Term, during cleaning day, we collected three bags of recylable plastic and brought it to the recycling center in Gubbängen.

Every month, we collected large bags of recyclable plastic from the Student Room , the Staff Room and the Science Labs and brought them to the recycling center in Gubbängen.

On Cleaning Day just before Christmas, we put out upcycling boxes for students to put unwanted notebooks and pencils in. We then gave theses to students after Christmas who were in need of paper or pens. We will do this at the end of the Spring Term too.

We had planned to do a Book Swop and a Clothes Swop as part of our recycling/upcycling activities but, due to COVID-19 restrictions we could not do this. We hope to do it next term.

We put a glass and plastic bottle recycling bin in the staff room. When we had three large bags of plastic bottles, we brought them to COOP and used the PANT machine there and donated the money to VI-Skogen.

Picking Up Rubbish

During April and May, all classes were offered the opportunity to pick up rubbish in their local area as part of either the SVEVIA Clean-Up Stockholm project or the Hålla Sverige Rent project. Not all teachers had the time/opportunity to bring their classes but some did. Large area of forest and along by footpaths in the Gubbängen area were cleaned of rubbish by our IESE students. Our Green Flag committee members took part in the SVEVIA project and donated the 3000kr to three environmental charities  - Greenpeace, WWF and 4ocean. It was great to see all year groups - year 4-6 working on this together!

This was voted on by the committee.

Animals in Focus

Year 6 students all read about, identified and discussed endangered animals. Their projects were displayed to educate everyone on this topic.

Extra workshop classes are held every Wednesday in order for students to make bee hotels from recycled wood. The plan is to put these up in our school garden to encourage bees to the area.

We participated in the Svevia Clean Up Stockholm project and received 3000kr for our efforts. We voted on which charities to donate it to. We agreed to give 1000kr to each of the following charites. WWF, Greenpeace and 4Ocean. See the photos for the confirmation of payments.

WWF and Greenpeace carry out many important good deeds to help the wild animals on our planet and we are happy to have contributed to these efforts.

UTVÄRDERING

Hållbar utveckling

We believe our work has led to a lot of sustainable development in our school and surrounding area. We were very focussed on the sustainable development goals all year, and we were involved in 8 different activities, as outlined in our activities section. Our overall main achievements were: -reducing the amount of paper used in our school -increasing the amount of paper and plastic recycled in our school -increasing the awareness amongst all students of the sustainable development goals, past environmental achievements, recycling facilities, up-cycling possibilities, endangered animals, renewable energy sources and issues with food waste -helping students to focus on the natural environment around the school by planting flowers and picking up rubbish -donating to three environmental charities -helping students to feel and see that they can make a difference -securing one meat-free day a week in our school lunchroom

UTVÄRDERING

Delaktighet och inflytande

The Green Flag council met every Monday from 08.45-9.00 with Ms Clare King. We used that time to discuss projects and plan when to do them. Then we picked a time during the week that would be suitable for that activity. The rest of the students participated in different ways - reading noticeboards, joining in the Green Flag BINGO game, recycling plastic and paper, helping with planting seeds, participating in sustainable science projects.

UTVÄRDERING

Handlingskraft

The students came up with great ideas for the administration team regarding paper reduction and were delighted to see their ideas taken on. The meeting with the head chef and one of the directors of the school kitchen, Kleins, was wonderful as they were impressed at the ideas the students had and the students were delighted they agreed to take on their ideas. When we were picking up rubbish in the local area , many passers-by commented on what we were doing and praised the students and the students were happy with themselves and really felt they were making a difference. The students could see the positive outcomes of the effort they made with the planting!
